Sri Lanka: The Best in South Asia

Sri Lanka: The Best Country in South Asia

In the commemoration of the gruesome incident that recently took place in Sri Lanka, this is a tribute blog to stand by Sri Lanka. Stay strong and time will just be Right.

The only country that I’ve travelled in South Asia outside Nepal is Sri Lanka (well couple of days in Delhi don’t count as a travel for me). Not counting my prejudice towards my own country, Sri Lanka for me is the best country that I’ve travelled in South Asia.

A small island in Indian Ocean, extending over 9 provinces, the vacation in Sri Lanka is a perfect gift you could give to own self in exchange of your hard owned annual leave. The surfer’s paradise and relaxing beach in south to lush green tea estates in the central province, Sri Lanka is always ready to welcome all kinds of nature lovers, tea fanatics, hikers, surfers, romantic getaway or beer by the beach lovers.

The capital, Colombo albeit commercial, it does offers some touristic attraction. But, you need get away from Colombo, if you are to witness the real beauty of Sri Lanka. The stunning and smooth drive of around 100 km away from Colombo towards Central province leads to another beautiful city called Kandy. Often labelled as ‘sacred city’, Kandy kind of offers some royal and antique European flavours to the town. A lake in the heart of the city adds glitters to this gold city. Famously known for the “Tooth Relic”, a temple in the heart of the city, Kandy in a way reiterates Lankans’ fidelity towards Buddhism. The place also offers one of the biggest statute of Buddha, if anyone fancies for the same.

After the picturesque Kandy, couple hours of drive away takes you to completely different yet stunning city, Nuara Elia. With quick stopovers for tea amidst the lush green forests and breath-taking tea gardens, the road to Nuara Elia from Kandy is uniquely beautiful and visually stunning. Nuara Elia is quick escape, if you’re done and dusted with the heat and humidity of other parts of Lanka. Two thousand meters above sea level, Nuara Elia (the mini England, as they say) is chilling cold all year around. No matter what, the exquisiteness of Nuara Elia would definitely steal your heart with its charming beauty.

Another not to be missed place in Sri Lanka is Ella. Ella is quite famous amongst tourists. The walk in bars, fancy restaurants, live music and sports clubs in the middle of the city keeps the city alive until late.  The city in some way reflects Lakeside of Pokhara and Thamel of Kathmandu, Nepal. Surrounded by the hills and serene tea gardens, Ella offers some good deals for Hikers. A hike to Adams’ peak and Ella rock are two hikes that’s quite famous around tourists. Also, watching the train pass by the nine arch bridge (built by the British back in colonial time), is an icing to the cake. Also, if you manage to make a train ride from Kandy to Ella, or at least from Nuara Elia to Ella, thank Karma, you just bought yourself the most satisfying return gift, ever.

After the ‘chill in the hill’, the next up is ‘run for the sun’. A long road across the beautiful Ravana fall, a majestic waterfall right in the middle of highway, takes you to the Beach Capital, the Southern coast of Sri Lanka. Letting the day slip through and contemplating over the finest vacation that you just made through over the sip of beer, by the clean sandy beach draped with sleek palm/coconut trees, is out rightly fulfilling and absolutely rejuvenating. All in all, in whatever means, Sri Lanka will never fail to appease you. Not to mention about the food, Sri Lankan cuisine is such a delight to your taste buds especially if you are from the same region.

My heart goes out to all Sri Lankans. Stay Strong!!
